Ryanair has a baggage handlers strike going on right now at Madrid Airport. Although Ryanair announce that workers are now back to work, airline is still on alert. Ryanair adjusted to this strike by giving passengers a choice of landing in another airport, change flight to a different day or fly with no luggage. Perhaps your airline will follow a similar routine or use managers as handlers or bring in scabs.

Baggage handler strike will start Saturday May 30. No end date given.
20 -30% of workers to be given the heave ho. This is a very busy hub for Ryanair - over 40 destinations. You know the routine, just bring hand luggage. Perhaps Ryanair will bring in outside workers. Passengers who are already on holiday in Spain must be @!*&^#!!

Old strikes for 2015
7 April, 2015 Spanish flights likely to be delayed by French air traffic control strike April and May 2015.

PS Now it's time Swissport baggage handlers strike.

FEBRUARY 10, 2015 HEADS UP:-GREAT NEWS,
AENA 27 DAYS OF STRIKE ACTIONS HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

           Overall 27 Strikes
(Nothing’s easy in Spain is it?)

Strike dates:-
Spread out between 11 February, 2015 and August 31, 2015.

That’s 22 days of 24 hour strikes
and 5 days partial strikes.

Crucial dates of course, Easter and summer holiday’s.

Friday, February 6, USO union planned demonstrations 10 am to noonat all work stations.

February 11 (day airports go up for sale) 10 am to 1pm.
March 18 length?
March 19 and 22 are 24 hour strikes.

(When is Easter? -
Good Friday April 3rd, Easter Monday April 6th both days are Spanish national public holidays)

April 1 is a 15 - 24 hour strike day?
April 2, 5, 6 will see 24 hour strikes.
April 30th workers will strike from 15 - 24 hours?

May 14 and 17, are 24 hour strikes but only in Madrid.
Spring now summer
June 3 will see a 15 - 24 hour strike?
June 4, 7 and 30th will all see 24 hour strikes.

July 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 15 and 31st all 24 hour strikes

(August 15th Assumption Day, national public holiday)

August 1, 2, 14, 30 and 31st all 24 hour strikes

(We will be double checking these times and dates)

Workers participating:-
Maintenance, power, firemen and other key areas?
(key areas means? Baggage handlers? No, baggage handlers are not involved as they do not work for Aena. Airport security? Will update when we get information)

Why:-
Spanish airport operator Aena up for sale, hasn't made payroll for the last three years. Aena is the world's largest airport operator, carries 195 million passengers yearly.
Spanish airport workers unhappy with the government selling of 49%, partial privatization to most likely a foreign company and future job losses. Bloated, 9,000 employees, 46 airports and 2 heliports. Includes London - Luton, Mexico and Colombia airports.

Two main unions represent 70% of Aena workers CCOO and USO have called for strike action.

(Grumblings
I’m forever optimistic that there will be so much backlash for the unions that perhaps they will cancel strike action over Easter. You can hear the crashing of hotel bookings to the floor already ruining the fragile as it is Spanish economy. National airline Iberia is already owned by the Brits/Qatar 10% and running at a profit.

If you have to maneuver around these strike dates, remember flights won’t be back to normal for a good 24 hours afterwards. Workers won’t be in any hurry to move you along.

So far Spanish air traffic control are not joining in. Last time they had a strike the army took over Spanish air space, thankfully. Thousands of passengers left stranded some without hotels and cash.
Do you remember Britain sent an aircraft carrier to pick up stranded English tourists? Who by the way new exactly what they were going into and didn’t want to loose money with the booking and ended up paying big time with extras. Perhaps UK tour operators should have been more responsible. Car rental's were none existent. A few controllers even ended up with jail time, naturally they are tentative. Some may not show up for work, which is so painful for the Canary Islands. We will be watching them.

Worst case scenario that we’ve seen in Spain was:-
Remember to have room on your credit card for added expenses such as extra nights hotel room and food. Only expensive rooms will be available or dives, if you can find one. Your hotel will likely kick you out because new tourists will be arriving. Where’s the love? Canary Islands for another day, can't be all bad... Can it?

Remember save all receipts.
